I saw this last night and I love the idea. The big question is – with Tom as George, who is cast as Mr. Emerson?
This is a great question, thanks, and it’s one I have thought about a lot!
As I wrote in this earlier post, coming up with the right way to introduce Tom’s father into this story is one of the trickier parts of this AU, I think. He’s essential as the catalyst for Lucy realising/admitting her feelings for George in the original A Room with a View story, but of course there’s nothing to go on from Downton Abbey at all in terms of Tom’s father.
So I kept it simple and thought about Irish actors of the right sort of age as a starting point. It wasn’t easy, but in the end I chose Brendan Gleeson for the role.
He’s got enough of a look of Allen – similar colouring, anyway – and I could really imagine him as the honest, direct, middle class man who brings Sybil and Tom together in this story. He also has a really funny side, which I remember from a small indie movie he did a while back – The Guard – which makes him a good fit to be Allen’s dad, too. 🙂

ugh, it was one of those weekends, and I’m still emotionally recovering from it. It’s only been a few days, but it feels so much longer since I was last on tumblr. I think I’m just going to “treat myself” and do some writing today instead of work if I can get away with it (sshhhh, don’t tell!)
Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate for the first time in Qigong–and it was amazing! I’ve never done any sort of exercise like that, and I certainly felt the energy moving in my hands and fingertips, something I’ve heard people talk about but have never experienced myself like that. I want to join a class, but my only fear is that everyone who attends it will be “pros”, people who have been doing this for ages, and I’m a newbie and would still like something very basic. Must do research!

As a post-Christmas treat to themselves, Sybil, Gwen, William and Tom, who were all very close friends, decided to take a holiday together in the English countryside. They had hoped for beautiful crisp frosty grass underfoot, but upon their arrival at their hotel, the weather was windy and rainy and foul. All they wanted was to get to their rooms and go to bed. But the rain had caused a leak in the old hotel, meaning a few of the rooms were out of order. The three rooms they had booked, a double for Gwen and William and two singles for Sybil and Tom, had turned into two doubles between the four of them. Sybil and Tom agreed that they were adults and could platonically share a bed for a few days without anything going awry. The first night was, surprisingly, entirely free of awkwardness. But the next morning was a bit more of an issue. Waking up beside Sybil, the woman he had wanted to be with for a number of years, seeing her hair spilling over the pillow, feeling the warmth radiating from her body, being with her in such close proximity… Tom knew that the rest of the holiday would not be as easy and carefree as he had first hoped.
Baby, it’s cold outside…and there’s only one bed.

All of the themes for this year are based on favorite “fanfic tropes”; the kind of prompt basis that is just catnip to us fans! And I’m pleased to announce this month’s (still plenty of time!) which will hopefully get many a creative juices flowing, as we “ROCK THE FORCED-TO-SHARE-A-BED AU” :oP
Ok, that’s a mouthful, but ooooohhhhh the delicious possibilities! After all, it’s January, and with freezing temps in many of the world, sometimes you JUST HAVE TO get into that little bed and snuggle up nice and tight with a certain Irishman to keep him and yourself warm! (And if you do live a part of the world where it’s summery, this still applies–because forced to share a bed always results in everyone getting hot and sticky) ;o)
So whether it’s show era with Tom and Sybil “forced” to pull over due to a snowstorm, (or perhaps Sybil is freezing when they’re at the Swan Inn and she just INSISTS Tom keep her warm rather than shiver in his own chair) ;o) OR, it could be modern AU or any other historical period of your choosing…but whatever the setting and place, there’s bound to be fun as Tom and Sybil seek comfort (and one another) beneath the covers.
So grab a blanket, a notebook or laptop, and create stories, drabbles, fanart, and picsets while snuggling down to this month’s theme of Tom and Sybil “just HAVING” to share a bed.
I mean they just have to! They can’t help it if…other things happen…
