Imagine how much more he would make in those 10 seconds if he pissed in a Gatorade bottle

Amazon also doesn’t pay anything in federal taxes and a lot of their
workers are on government assistance. That’s really fucking cool.

that’s where government regulations should kick in.

But until those regulations are established, the responsibility lies on *YOU* the consumer.

BOYCOTT AMAZON.

You don’t like how they treat workers?

You don’t like how they handle wages?

You don’t like how they cheat the economy by wriggling out of paying their share in taxes?

THEN DON’T BUY FROM THEM.

Don’t use them for music, movies, streaming, books, ANYTHING.

DEMAND change, and until they do, DON’T BUY/USE AMAZON.

No, Amazon Cannot Replace Libraries

nypl:

Public libraries are not going anywhere.

Let me tell you something about public libraries and how *vital* they are to a community…

First off, public libraries offer a safe space for children after school, or on school holidays or in the summer when parents work all day and can’t afford full-time caregivers.

Libraries offer community education programs, from learning a second language, to discussions on local history, to cooking and gardening demonstrations, etc, a majority of which are FREE of charge!  There’s also on-site tutoring for children and adults in a variety of fields.

Libraries are also a great place to receive important information in regards to income taxes and voter registration.  Many libraries have copies of the basic tax forms you need, as well as “How-To” booklets you can take with you.  Libraries can provide you information about new state and local government laws and with bi-partisan information on how they will effect the community.

Libraries offer basic forms of technology that many people may not have at home.  Need to fax some information before a job interview?  How many places still have fax machines–OH! Libraries, that’s who!  Same goes for scanning documents.  Sometimes this is free, and if not, it’s dimes and quarters.  What if your printer breaks, or your computer has a virus and you can’t use it to check email or print something that you need for a job or school?  LIBRARIES TO THE RESCUE!

Have an older adult who needs some basic “how-to” knowledge when it comes to tech?  Libraries offer classes from keyboarding to how-to-use-a-smartphone.

And speaking of older adults, it’s not just children that libraries help. Seniors need social activities every bit as kids, and libraries provide that, from community arts and craft classes, to the ever popular book club.

And if you’re still not convinced, let me tell you one last story…

A few summers ago we had a power outage, one that affected our street for an entire week! And it was extremely hot in the middle of July.  We were miserable and weren’t sure what to do during the day.

But we found solace at our public library. We brought our phone chargers and were able to keep our phones juiced up so we could continue talking with the power company.  We also found peace from the heat inside the air-conditioned walls of the library, and were able to keep in touch with our various work places through the computer lab.

When a disaster strikes an area, be it a power outage or something far worse, public libraries are a safe haven where people can gather. Time and again, this has been proven.  Public libraries are VITAL! But Republicans want to shut them down, using the age-old “they eat up the community through taxes, get rid of all tax-run institutions!” blah, blah, blah.

Amazon and other companies would love to take the place of library, charging you every time you enter it’s doorway, and charging you every time you need to use anything they offer, from a book to a piece of tech, etc.

Don’t be fooled, they want libraries to suffer, because the worst thing in the world is an informed citizen who can call bullshit on a capitalist thug.  SUPPORT PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND BOYCOTT THOSE WHO STAND AGAINST THEM!

No, Amazon Cannot Replace Libraries

Make no mistake: If you spend a lot of money on Prime Day, a lot of it is going to find its way back to the richest man on Earth rather than the sometimes-impoverished workers who fulfilled your order. Something about that smacks of unfairness.

More and more I’ve become “anti-Amazon”

It’s been something gradually growing for several years. I’ve always been a “support brick and mortar stores!” over online companies, and always felt guilty whenever I purchased something from Amazon, especially as I heard about other stores, from small indie places to larger chains, laying off employees or closing their doors permanently because they couldn’t compete.

Then I heard about the shifty ways Amazon tries to avoid paying sales tax in most (if not all) states, which forces other companies to “foot the bill”.

But the creme de la creme for the whole thing came this past holiday season, when I heard more and more about the atrocious ways Amazon treats its warehouse workers and drivers, treating them more like machines than human beings (and the sad truth is, they would probably happily replace their workers with machines if they could).

I had thought that perhaps I would only use Amazon for the purchase of ebooks. But now articles are pouring out about the ways certain “con-authors” (like Faleena Hopkins to name one) abuse the system and Amazon does little or moves in far too late to reprimand these con artists.  I’m not saying these problems don’t happen with other online ebook platforms, but you certainly don’t hear about it with NOOK or Kobo the same way you do with Amazon.

But whether it’s publishing, music, media (TV *and* film), travel, grocery stores, and even non-profit charity work…this company isn’t becoming a monopoly…it *is* one. And that’s terrifying.

When cities and states, governors and mayors are more or less felatting themselves over who gets to be the next Amazon hub, making so many deals like “we’ll never tax you!” or “we’ll never regulate you!” or any other number of shady, “look the other way while we do something illegal or unethical” deals…then this is *not* a company we should support.

I’ve seen so much over the past week about “boycott Amazon!” and “stand with the workers who are striking!” and I agree…but unless we, the consumer, STOP making purchases from this company, then all our reblogs are meaningless.

If you want to purchase ebooks, then use another platform: I recommend Kobo, who have close ties to many indie bookstores and publishers.

Want print books? Be they old or new, I highly recommend thriftbooks.com

Do your research–we all know there are other resources out there for music and media that aren’t connected to Amazon. Give the competition some of your time and attention–this is the “positive” side to Capitalism, if you will; as consumers we have the power to tell companies what we want. If they want our business, then THEY need to meet our needs and demands, and if they don’t, then we need to take our business someplace else.

Seriously, do your research on companies that practice “conscious capitalism”–these are businesses that usually achieve high scores among employees for ethical work treatment and practices.

And while I’m not versed on all that “Amazon Smile” does for non-profit charities, I always look to charitynavigator.org as a trusted, reliable source.

We really need to put our money where our mouth is; it’s one thing to say we support these causes (and reblog about them) but then when we go back and make various “insta-purchases” with a company that we are cementing more and more with every click into that “world domination monopoly”, then we are basically a bunch of political, hypocritical posers.

DEMAND justice for Amazon workers. DEMAND ethical treatment, fairer wages, and human decency.  DEMAND it and say, “you aren’t getting my business until you make these changes!” And then follow that through by giving your business elsewhere until those changes are made.

Older generations are always saying that the younger ones don’t care, that they’re apathetic and that’s why “all these changes they demand for” never change, because they don’t follow through.

Bullshit. Let’s prove otherwise.

10 July 2018

Reminder: Do not buy from Amazon or even open the website on 10 July 2018, in solidarity with the transnational strike.

Amazon workers in Spain have called for a transnational strike because Amazon has been avoiding accountability for its labour rights violations by merely shifting the work (and the human rights abuses Amazon inflicts on their workers) to non-striking countries, each time a strike occurs. If there is widespread striking transnationally, Amazon will have no choice but to recognize the strikers’ demands in order to keep their facilities functioning.

Our job as allies is to support the strike by avoiding using the Amazon website or purchasing anything from Amazon for as long as the strike continues. A mass boycott of the site, coinciding with the strike, will strengthen the workers’ bargaining position and could be crucial to Amazon workers gaining back basic rights in a variety of countries.
